Remember a time when the first steam engine in North America chugged to life right here in North Arlington. This borough boasts a rich history. It played a pivotal role in early American industry.

North Arlington, a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, wasn’t always the residential haven it is today. Its story is interwoven with industrial innovation and a strong sense of community. Let’s step back in time and explore the layers of North Arlington’s past.

In the 1750s, this area was the site of America’s first working steam engine. It pumped water from a local copper mine. The Schuyler Copper Mine significantly shaped North Arlington’s early development. Copper ore was discovered here. Mining began.

John Schuyler imported a “fire engine” from England. He hired Josiah Hornblower to assemble it. This steam engine addressed flooding issues in the mine. On March 12, 1755, the engine was first used. It marked a major milestone in American engineering.

Imagine the scene. The rhythmic chugging of the engine. The bustling activity around the mine. This innovation drew attention to North Arlington. The copper mine experienced ups and downs. It closed and reopened several times. Restrictions on smelting in the colonies meant ore was shipped to England.

The mine’s deepest shaft reached 347 feet. It produced ore containing silver and gold. The copper mine eventually closed in 1865.

North Arlington transitioned from an industrial area to a residential community. On March 9, 1896, the area became the Borough of North Arlington. It separated from Union Township. The name “North Arlington” distinguished it from the Arlington section of Kearny.

Today, North Arlington is a crossroads. Hudson County lies on one side and Essex County on the other. It is a residential area with a small town atmosphere. Big city neighbors surround it. North Arlington provides an excellent home for commuters. This borough is voted a great place to raise a family.

Consider the legacy of innovation that began here. From the first steam engine to a thriving community. North Arlington blends history with modern living. The echoes of its industrial past resonate. They shape its identity. North Arlington maintains a dynamic and ethnically diverse environment. Its residents represent nationalities from around the world. It is a testament to the borough’s All-American spirit.
