Forgotten for decades, Hallett Nature Sanctuary awaited rediscovery. This four-acre haven sits at Central Park’s southeast corner. It is surrounded on three sides by the Pond. Imagine a place untouched for years. Invasive species ran rampant. It became overgrown and almost forgotten.

In 1934, Robert Moses closed it off. He wanted to create a bird sanctuary. The area became an experiment. What would happen if nature took over? In 1986, it was renamed for naturalist George Harvey Hallett Jr.

But in 2001, things changed. The Conservancy began restoration work. They reintroduced native plants. Invasive species were removed. The goal? To balance ecological and cultural value.

In 2013, Hallett Nature Sanctuary opened to the public for the first time in 79 years. Today, the Conservancy constantly cares for the plants. They are working to increase bird and butterfly populations.

The Hallett Nature Sanctuary is more diverse and healthier. It supports various wildlife. It serves as a peaceful haven for visitors.

What improvements were made? Invasive plants were removed. Soil health was improved. Native plant communities were diversified. Extended irrigation lines were installed. This allows workers to water the plantings regularly. Trails were expanded for exploration. Accessible trails were added. These meet standards for outdoor recreational areas. The surrounding fence was lowered. It went from eight feet to four feet.

A rustic wooden gate was constructed. It welcomes visitors to the sanctuary. It is carved from durable black locust timber. A scenic overlook was built. Rustic railings and benches were added. These offer meditation spots. They emphasize views of the Pond and the south end of the Park.

Even Hurricane Sandy played a role. A large tree was uprooted. Instead of being cleared, it became part of the habitat.

Hallett Nature Sanctuary is open every day. You can visit from 10 a.m. until 30 minutes before sunset. No dogs, bicycles, or strollers are allowed.

The Hallett Nature Sanctuary boasts a promontory. It overlooks the lake and Gapstow Bridge. Buildings rise beyond. This contrast is striking. Overgrown woods meet the city. Come explore this unique space.
