Twenty-one years. That’s how long it’s been since the tragedy at Nassiriya. Here, at the Monumento ai Caduti di Nassiriya in Milan, we remember those lost in the 2003 attack. This memorial, situated in Largo Caduti Milanesi per la Patria, stands as a stark reminder of the sacrifices made by Italian soldiers and civilians in international peace missions. The Monumento ai Caduti di Nassiriya isn’t just a monument. It’s a space for reflection, a place to honor the 19 lives brutally taken by terrorism on November 12th, 2003. Twelve Carabinieri, five soldiers, and two civilians perished in the attack on the Maestrale base. They were part of Operation “Antica Babilonia”, a peace-keeping mission in Iraq. A suicide bomber detonated a tanker truck filled with explosives. The blast ripped through the Italian base. It triggered the explosion of the munitions depot. This resulted in the deaths of 28 people, including nine Iraqis. The attack was the deadliest for Italian forces since World War II. Every year, a commemoration ceremony is held here at the Monumento ai Caduti di Nassiriya. Representatives from the regional government, military officials, and family members of the victims gather to pay their respects. They share stories, not only of the fallen soldiers and civilians, but also of the impact the tragedy had on the entire nation. The Monumento ai Caduti di Nassiriya serves as a poignant symbol. It represents the enduring commitment of Italy to peace and the heavy price sometimes paid in its pursuit.
