Seven souls gathered. That was the humble beginning of Seoul Sungrak Church. November 30 1969 marked its first worship service. It took place in Shingildong Youngdungpo District. Pastor Ki Dong Kim’s fervent faith fueled its rapid growth.

From those initial seven members it blossomed into a mega-church. By 1987 membership exceeded 37000. The church’s motto “Absolute Double” reflects its ambitious expansion during the 1980s. This rapid growth caught international attention. Southwest Baptist University even developed a “Ki-Dong Kim theory of church growth”. This recognized the church’s remarkable expansion. Pastor Kim was appointed a professor and international director.
Seoul Sungrak Church is more than numbers though. It’s a vibrant community. The church established Berea Academy in 1978. This provided systematic theological training. Berea Academy produced many powerful lay ministers. It also trained disciples of Jesus. The church organized various Bible studies. Academic courses were also provided. These were designed to nurture strong spiritual leadership.
The church’s architectural design is impressive. It’s a testament to its architectural beauty. The church building in Singil-dong was even awarded by Seoul Metropolitan City. New buildings were built to accommodate the continuing growth. These included the Christian World Mission Center. The World Christian Leader Center followed soon after. Seoul Sungrak Church continues to expand its ministry. It aims to serve the world’s communities.
