Why did Ruston & Hornsby, a renowned engineering firm, venture into car manufacturing? The Ruston Locomotief here offers a glimpse into the company’s diverse history. Ruston & Hornsby, formed in 1918 through a merger, became a prominent player in various industries. They were known for their narrow and standard gauge diesel locomotives, steam shovels, and even steam engines. The Ruston Locomotief stands as a testament to this legacy. After World War I, the company sought to diversify its portfolio. This led to the creation of the Ruston-Hornsby car. Two models were produced: a 15.9 hp version with a Dorman engine and a 20 hp model with a Ruston & Hornsby engine. These cars, however, proved to be heavy and expensive. They struggled to compete with lighter and more affordable vehicles from other manufacturers. The Ruston-Hornsby car venture ultimately ended in 1924. Despite this setback, Ruston & Hornsby continued to excel in other areas, particularly in diesel engine and locomotive production. The Ruston Locomotief reminds us of the company’s ambitious spirit and its significant contributions to industrial history.
