Whispers of “Igriji,” meaning “small church,” drift on the wind here in Grijó. These whispers hint at the ancient origins of this town, dominated by the magnificent Monastery of São Salvador de Grijó. Grijó itself, nestled within the bustling Porto metropolitan area, retains a tranquil heart. The name “Grijó,” echoing those early whispers of “Igriji,” evolved over centuries, reflecting the growth and history of this special place. The monastery’s story begins in the 10th century. Two clergymen, Guterre and Ausindo Soares, founded the original monastery. Imagine them, in 922 AD, laying the foundation for what would become a landmark for the ages. The monastery moved to its current location in 1112. Its history is one of resilience and rebirth. By the early 16th century, the monastery lay in ruins. King João III authorized its relocation. Not all monks agreed with this decision. Pope Pius V intervened, separating the original Grijó monastery from its new counterpart. The monks returned to Grijó, and in 1574, reconstruction began under the guidance of architect Francisco Velasquez. The church’s completion took nearly thirty years. Within these walls, history whispers another tale. D. Rodrigo Sanches, illegitimate son of King Sancho I, met his end near the monastery in a clash against his half-brother, King Sancho II. His tomb, a masterpiece of 13th-century sculpture, resides within the monastery. It serves as a poignant reminder of the tumultuous power struggles of the time. The monastery also holds the echoes of the Napoleonic Wars. In 1809, the Battle of Grijó raged, and the monastery served as a hospital, tending to the wounded. The echoes of suffering and resilience mingled within its ancient stones. And for those who appreciate literary connections, Grijó served as the backdrop for Júlio Dinis’s 19th-century novel, “A Morgadinha dos Canaviais,” adding a layer of romantic intrigue to the town’s historical tapestry.
