Behold L’Anneau! Isn’t it a sight to behold? This giant ring graces Place Ville Marie. It is an emblem of Montreal’s modern spirit. L’Anneau is more than just a pretty face. It is an artwork with a story.

L’Anneau came to life in 2022. Claude Cormier + Associés designed it. Marmen built it with engineering input from NCK inc. Many others contributed their expertise. It all started as a project by Ivanhoé Cambridge. They wanted to celebrate Place Ville Marie’s 60th anniversary.

The ring is massive. It spans 30 meters. That is 98 feet! It weighs 23,000 kilograms. That is 51,000 pounds! It didn’t come cheap. The cost was over CA$5,000,000.

L’Anneau is made of stainless steel. The tubes are 80 centimeters in diameter. That’s about 31.5 inches. The ring is suspended above the entrance to Place Ville Marie’s esplanade. It faces Cathcart Street. The grand opening was September 14, 2022. Ariane Moffatt and Sarahmée performed.

L’Anneau is heated. This prevents snow from piling up. Vibration dampers keep it steady. They protect it from wind and earthquakes. Franz Knoll worked on the original PVM design. He helped with L’Anneau too. He was 83 years old at the time. His knowledge was invaluable.

L’Anneau frames a unique view. It aligns with McGill University, Mount Royal, and the mountain’s cross. It highlights this strong visual axis. It connects Place Ville Marie. The ring symbolizes Montreal’s strong connections. It unites its citizens and visitors.

Claude Cormier’s firm created L’Anneau. They are known for their innovative urban designs. Their work is playful and optimistic. They aim to transform living spaces. They blend beauty and ecology. Cormier sadly passed away shortly after its completion. L’Anneau was one of his last great works.

L’Anneau is more than a sculpture. It is a symbol. It represents Montreal’s modernity. It is a testament to public art. It enhances Place Ville Marie’s timeless appeal. It is a gathering place. It fosters a sense of belonging. It makes everyone feel Montrealais.

So, take a moment to appreciate L’Anneau. It is a unique piece of art. It is a symbol of Montreal’s spirit. It connects the city, its people, and its future.
