Gazing at Lanett Playground, can you hear the echoes of children’s laughter? Lanett Playground, nestled within PS 197 on Beach 9th Street, has a rich history. It’s a place where generations have come to swing, slide, and dream. Lanett Playground was more than just cracked asphalt and outdated equipment. It was the only playground in West Lawrence. It held the hopes of a community. Then, in May 2012, a transformation began. A $2.44 million revitalization project breathed new life into Lanett Playground. The old swings made way for an 8-foot-tall swing set. A brand new basketball court emerged, inviting friendly competition. New planting beds added a touch of nature. Benches, reminiscent of the 1964 World’s Fair, offered a place to rest and reflect. Steel picket fences and gates enhanced safety and accessibility. The entire area was repaved, creating a smooth, inviting surface. This wasn’t just a renovation. It was a renewal of community spirit. But the story doesn’t end there. An ADA-accessible comfort station and a water play feature were also in the works. These additions would make Lanett Playground even more inclusive and enjoyable for everyone. Lanett Playground stands as a testament to the power of community and the importance of play. It’s a place where laughter rings out, where dreams take flight, and where memories are made.
