Have you ever heard of a place where furniture is practically in the blood? Welcome to Rebordosa, a small city in the northern region of Tâmega, an area known for its history of woodworking. Let’s head to a small town square, where a vibrant community gathered for a lively celebration. Imagine a cacophony of laughter, music, and the joyful sounds of people mingling. The energy is electric, fueled by a deep sense of pride in their woodworking heritage. Rebordosa, you see, has a very special story to tell.

It all started way back in the Middle Ages, when the region was home to abundant forests. As a source of raw material, these forests helped shape the local economy. People crafted everything from simple tools to elegant furniture, making Rebordosa a hub for woodworking. But the region’s history is not just about wood.

During the 19th century, Rebordosa found itself at the centre of a turbulent clash between liberal and absolutist forces. The fiery speeches of Father Alvito Buela Pereira de Miranda, a prominent figure in the region, added to the tensions. It was a time of unrest, a time when Rebordosa braced itself for conflict. But Rebordosa soldiered on, its spirit of resilience and determination never wavering.

Then, in the early 20th century, a wave of change swept through Rebordosa. Small businesses, driven by a desire to innovate, began exporting their handcrafted furniture to bigger cities like Lisbon and Porto. This marked the beginning of a new chapter. Rebordosa emerged as a center for furniture making, its skilled craftspeople becoming renowned for their artistry. They became known as the “Sesilas,” inspired by an Italian-Sicilian who married a local woman.

Today, Rebordosa stands as a testament to its rich heritage. The FPIMM, a wood-related training centre, stands as a symbol of the city’s dedication to woodworking. Rebordosa is a place where history meets innovation, where craftsmanship meets passion. And during the city festival, held every first Sunday in July, the community comes together to celebrate its unique heritage with a vibrant display of music, food, and local crafts, including, of course, furniture!
