Ready to explore a silent sentinel overlooking the Narrows? Welcome to Battery Barbour. It stands as a testament to a time when coastal defenses were paramount.

Battery Barbour is located at Fort Wadsworth in Staten Island. It is also positioned within the Gateway National Recreation Area. Specifically, it sits south of Battery Weed. The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge casts its shadow over this historic site.

To truly appreciate Battery Barbour, we need to understand its context. Battery Barbour replaced a Civil War-era gun battery. This earlier battery was known as South Cliff Battery. It housed nine massive 15-inch Rodman guns.

Battery Barbour represents the fourth major upgrade to U.S. coastal defenses. This upgrade is known as the Endicott System. Construction began in 1898. This makes Battery Barbour the oldest of the three batteries at South Cliff.

Originally, Battery Barbour was armed with two M1898 4.72-inch guns. It also had two Armstrong 6-inch guns. These weapons were state-of-the-art for their time. They were intended to protect New York Harbor from potential naval attacks.

Battery Barbour remained active until 1920. It played a role in the defense of New York City. Yet, it never fired a shot in anger.

Sadly, no guns remain at Battery Barbour today. The elements and time have taken their toll. Also, the guns were likely removed for use in later conflicts.

Visitors can reach Battery Barbour. However, be prepared for some bushwhacking. Over the years, the site has become overgrown. A trail has been cut by intrepid explorers who want to see it up close.

You can examine Batteries Bacon and Turnbull without such difficulties. Since all three batteries share similar designs there is not so much value in seeing Battery Barbour directly.

Battery Barbour is more than just a collection of concrete and steel. It is a window into a pivotal period in American history. Here, coastal defense was a serious concern. The Endicott System reflected a desire to protect the nation’s shores.

Today, Battery Barbour stands as a reminder of that era. It is a place for reflection. The Battery offers a chance to learn about the history of Fort Wadsworth. It can also tell us about the evolution of military technology.

As you leave Battery Barbour, consider the ingenuity and effort that went into building these defenses. They are a link to the past. We can better appreciate the present by studying them. They are also a reminder of the constant need to adapt and innovate in the face of changing threats.
