Ever wonder what secrets lie within these walls? The Dancehouse on Oxford Road has a fascinating history to discover. It’s more than just a dance center. It is an entertainment hub.

The Dancehouse has witnessed Manchester’s cultural evolution. Its story began long before ballet shoes graced its floors. Originally, this building was designed by Pendleton and Dickson. They worked for Emmanuel Nove. He was a Ukrainian property developer. Nove envisioned two large meeting halls above a parade of shops. However, plans changed before completion.

In 1930, the halls transformed into the Regal Twins. These were fashionable Art Deco cinemas. The Regal Twins became the world’s first multiplex. Imagine moviegoers flocking to see different films in the same building.

In 1972, the cinemas evolved again. Star Group converted them into a five-screen complex. It was known as Studios 1 to 5. Star Group also established Studios 6-9 in Deansgate. But by the 1980s, the cinema complex closed.

The derelict property was leased in 1990. The Northern Ballet School saw its potential. They embarked on a mission to restore its Art Deco splendor. The Dancehouse Theatre officially opened in 1994. Princess Margaret herself graced the opening. The remaining cinemas transformed into dance studios. Now, they house the Northern Ballet School.

The Dancehouse Theatre complex is quite expansive. It covers 35000 square feet. It includes the theatre itself. There are also five dance studios. These include three medium and two large studios. A green room offers space for performers. A café bar, theatre bar and coffee shop provide refreshments.

Converting the theatre cost £500000. Donations poured in from various organizations. The Foundation for Sport and the Arts contributed generously. The Arts Council of England also supported the project.

The Dancehouse isn’t just about ballet and cinema. Local band Elbow filmed their video for “Newborn” here. The theatre transformed into an underwater set. Extras donned blue attire. The Dancehouse has a fully equipped theatre. It has industry-standard technology. There is a professional PA system. The system includes wireless microphones. A programmable LED lighting rig enhances performances.

The Dancehouse boasts five spacious dance studios. Each studio has sprung floors and mirrors. Ballet barres and pianos complete the space. Acting studios provide sound systems and pianos. A vocal practice room offers space for individual study.

The Dancehouse has a Mac suite. It features 15 high-specification Mac computers. These are equipped with audio and visual software. Recording interfaces and MIDI controllers are included.

The Dancehouse embodies Manchester’s artistic spirit. Its walls resonate with history. It’s a place where cinema screens transformed into dance floors. It is a space where performers hone their craft. The Dancehouse is a testament to the city’s vibrant cultural landscape. Take a moment to appreciate The Dancehouse.
