Have you ever seen a building built upside down? The Standard Bank Centre in Johannesburg is just that. A marvel of mid-century engineering. It stands tall a testament to innovative design.

The Standard Bank Centre isn’t just any skyscraper. This iconic building shaped Johannesburg’s skyline. It played a key role in the city’s economic growth. Its history is a fascinating blend of ambitious vision and ingenious construction.

Imagine the year 1966. Construction begins. It wasn’t a typical bottom-up project. This building was constructed from the top down. A central core was erected first. Then floors were suspended from cantilevered arms. The top floors were added first. Lower floors followed. The sheer audacity of this approach was remarkable. It minimized disruption in the already bustling Johannesburg CBD.

This “hanging” design wasn’t just a whim. It was a solution. Architects Helmut Hentrich and Hubert Petschnigg faced a challenge. They needed to build a large office building on a small site. The hanging design provided the answer saving precious square footage. The British-Danish-Norwegian engineer Ove Arup made this daring vision a reality. Concor Limited was responsible for the challenging physical construction.

The Standard Bank Centre is 139 meters tall with 34 floors. Five are underground. The lower levels housed a large computer center employing 300 people. A safe tower ran through the lower floors. Unique precast concrete slabs gave it a distinctive shape. Special long steel girders supported the building’s unique design. A custom slewing crane was designed to lift these huge sections into place. Concrete was delivered at night to avoid traffic congestion.

The tinted glass windows with double glazing provided sunlight protection. Ingenious 60-cm balustrades made window cleaning easy. The air vents are subtly integrated into the corners. The building’s design eliminated the need for interior supporting pillars. It created a spacious and functional interior.

The Standard Bank Centre stood as the tallest building in Africa for a brief period. It remained a symbol of South Africa’s economic strength. Standard Bank occupied the building until 1990. Then they moved to a new building. However the Standard Bank Centre remains a striking landmark. It’s a testament to the vision and ingenuity of its creators. A building that continues to amaze all who see it. A reminder of Johannesburg’s dynamic past and its innovative spirit.
