Gazing upon Saint Rafka Maronite Catholic Church, one might sense a profound connection to Lebanon. This church, located in Lakewood, Colorado, isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a vibrant testament to the Maronite Catholic faith, a bridge between cultures and a beacon for the Lebanese community in Denver. Saint Rafka Maronite Catholic Church stands as a unique entity in the Denver Archdiocese, representing the Maronite rite of the Eastern Catholic Church. While in communion with Rome, the church maintains its distinct liturgical traditions and linguistic heritage rooted in Syro-Aramaic, the language of Christ. The church also upholds the seven sacraments, the primacy of the Pope, and the core teachings of the Catholic Church. In May 2014, the church welcomed Bishop Abdallah E. Zaidan, marking his first pastoral visit after being appointed by Pope Francis. This visit also coincided with the 50th priesthood anniversary of Bishop Emeritus Robert J. Shaheen. To commemorate this dual celebration, a Sacred Concert for Peace and Conviviality was held, showcasing the beautiful harmony of Byzantine, Latin, and Maronite music, directed by the church’s pastor, Father Andre Mahanna. This event highlighted the church’s role as a center for cultural exchange and interfaith dialogue. Saint Rafka Church also hosted an extraordinary event. The relics of Saint Rafka herself, the Lebanese saint known as the “sixth wound of Christ,” journeyed from Lebanon to the church. This historic event, the first time relics of a Middle Eastern saint toured the United States, offered a unique opportunity for veneration. The church opened its doors to all, inviting them to share in this profound spiritual experience. During this time, the community engaged with the life of Saint Rafka through film screenings and documentaries, deepening their understanding of her devotion and suffering. The relics’ presence underscored the universality of faith and the powerful connection between the East and the West. Saint Rafka Maronite Catholic Church embodies more than just faith. It represents a rich cultural tapestry, a testament to the enduring spirit of the Lebanese Maronite community and a beacon of hope and peace in the heart of Denver.
