“Relocated in 1980” A simple statement. Yet it encapsulates a significant chapter in the history of Osaka Municipal Shigeno Elementary School.

Let’s explore the story of this school. The Osaka Municipal Shigeno Elementary School stands here today. It has a rich past. The school’s journey reflects the changing face of Osaka. It also reflects the community it serves.

Founded in 1933 the school wasn’t always here. Originally named Osaka Shigeno Normal Elementary School it was in a different location. It was situated in what is now Chuo-ku, Shigeno Nishi 2-chome.

Imagine the Osaka of the 1930s. The school opened its doors. It aimed to nurture young minds. December 1st 1933 is a special day. It marked the completion of the school building. The school commemorates this day as its founding anniversary.

In 1941 a change occurred. Due to national policy the school’s name changed to Osaka Shigeno National School. World War II brought many challenges. In September 1944 students were evacuated to Yoshida District in Fukui Prefecture.

After the war in 1947 the school became Osaka Municipal Shigeno Elementary School. This marked a new beginning.

Fast forward to the late 1970s. The area around the original school was changing. New high-rise apartments increased the number of children. The original site became too small. In 1980 Osaka Municipal Shigeno Elementary School moved to its current location.

Today Osaka Municipal Shigeno Elementary School continues its mission. It provides education. It serves the Shigeno area in Osaka’s Shiro Higashi ward. The school stands as a testament to the enduring importance of education. It is a pillar of the community. The school’s history is closely linked to the history of Osaka itself.
