Behold, the Arco della Pace. It towers before us. It stands as a powerful reminder of Milan’s rich history.

The Arco della Pace is one of Milan’s most iconic symbols. It marks the crossroads of tradition and innovation in Milan. The arch stands at the end of Parco Sempione. It provides a majestic appearance to the city.

Originally, the Arco della Pace was inspired by a temporary arch from 1806. It was made of wood, plaster, and canvas. This temporary structure welcomed newlyweds Eugene de Beauharnais and Augusta of Bavaria. Eugene was the viceroy of Italy and Napoleon’s son. The city council loved it. They wanted a permanent marble arch.

Luigi Cagnola designed both arches. Construction began in 1087. The site was behind the Castello Sforzesco. This is now Piazza Sempione. The arch was meant to celebrate France’s victory over Germany. This happened at the Battle of Jena. But in 1814, the Kingdom of Italy fell. Construction stopped even though it was nearly done.

Work resumed in 1826. Emperor Francis I of Austria ordered the completion. He changed the dedication to “Arch of Peace”. It honored the peace achieved at the Congress of Vienna in 1815. Luigi Cagnola died in 1833. Carlo Giuseppe Londonio finished the Arco della Pace in 1837.

The victory of Magenta in 1859 freed Milan from Austrian rule. Napoleon III and Victor Emmanuel II marched under the Arco della Pace. They celebrated this historic moment. The Arco della Pace became a symbol of Milan. It stands alongside the Milan Cathedral and Via Monte Napoleone.

The Arco della Pace stands 25 meters high and 24 meters wide. Its largest arch measures 14.24 meters. It is similar to the Arc de Triomphe in Paris. However, Milan’s arch boasts richer decorations.

The monument features three arches. Four fluted columns with Corinthian capitals support them. Baveno granite and Crevoladossola stone make up the arch. At the top is Abbondio Sangiorgio’s “La Sestiga della Pace”. This features six bronze horses pulling the chariot of the Goddess of Peace. Giovanni Putti’s four galloping Victories stand in the corners.

Marble bas-reliefs decorate the facade. They depict historical moments. Statues of deities are present. Works represent arts and crafts. Sculptures represent the Po, Adige, Ticino, and Tagliamento rivers.

The Arco della Pace stands as a gate to Parco Sempione. This is a place to escape the city. The plaza is a popular meeting spot. Concerts and events happen beneath the arch. Restaurants and clubs near the Arco della Pace contribute to Milan’s nightlife.

The Arco della Pace embodies Milan. It represents history, art, and social life. It is more than a monument. It is a living symbol of Milan. It connects the past with the present.
