Seoul Air Base

Did you know that Seoul Air Base once held a different name? Before it became the vital airbase we see today it was known as Yeouido Air Base. This was during the time of Japanese rule in Korea. Seoul Air Base sits proudly near Seoul in South Korea. It’s more than just a military airfield. It’s a piece of history a testament to the country’s resilience and its strategic importance. The base has seen significant action. It played a pivotal role during the Korean War. Units like the 35th Fighter-Interceptor Group flying F-51s were stationed here. The 3rd Air Rescue Squadron with its Sikorsky H-5s also operated from Seoul Air Base. Imagine the whirring of propellers the roar of engines the constant tension of wartime operations. These are just glimpses of the base’s vibrant past. After the Korean War Yeouido Air Base closed in 1970. The military relocated to its current location in Sinchon-ri. It was then renamed Seoul Air Base. Today Seoul Air Base is home to the ROKAF 15th Special Missions Wing. The US Army’s 2nd Battalion 2nd Aviation Regiment 2nd Infantry Division also calls this base home. These soldiers operate Sikorsky UH-60 Blackhawks. The Seoul ADEX a significant air show is held biennially on this very airfield. The base serves as a VIP airfield for the President of South Korea and other dignitaries. It’s a place where history meets modern technology. A seemingly small fact stands out: the construction of the Lotte World Tower. Many pilots and air traffic controllers opposed its construction. They feared it would pose a safety hazard interfering with flight paths. However after airfield modifications the 555-meter-tall skyscraper was built.
