Built in 1924 for Rudolf ten Hompel, a wealthy industrialist, Villa ten Hompel was initially a place of lavish parties and social gatherings. However, the economic turmoil of the Great Depression led to ten Hompel’s financial ruin, and the villa was seized by the National Treasury in 1939. A year later, it took on a new and chilling role. The Ordnungspolizei, the Nazi regime’s uniformed police force, established their headquarters for the entire region within these very walls. It was from here, in offices overlooking those once vibrant gardens, that the machinery of oppression was controlled. Imagine the orders issued, the reports filed, all part of the systematic persecution of Jews, Sinti, and Roma. Villa ten Hompel stands as a stark reminder of the darkest chapter in human history. It reminds us that even in the most ordinary of places, evil can take root and flourish. But it also serves as a beacon of hope. After the war, this same building housed the Reparations Department, providing some measure of justice to those who had suffered. Today, Villa ten Hompel is a memorial site and museum.
