Craving a bit of green within Nuremberg’s walls? Here, before us, is the Heilpflanzengarten. This garden is more than just a collection of plants. It is a testament to the power of community and the enduring appeal of natural medicine.
The Heilpflanzengarten am Hallertor is a shining example of what collaboration can achieve. Once under the care of the pharmaceutical company Bionorica, the garden risked neglect when the company relocated. The city was unable to maintain it adequately. Thankfully, Otto Heimbucher stepped in.
Heimbucher envisioned revitalizing one of the old castle gardens. These gardens once cultivated medicinal plants. Though the castle location proved impractical for security reasons, an alternative arose. A staff member suggested the former Heilpflanzengarten of Bionorica at Hallertor.
In 2010, the Bund Naturschutz took over the initiative. They worked with the Servicebetrieb Öffentlicher Raum and the Referat für Umwelt und Gesundheit. Volunteers lovingly restored the Heilpflanzengarten on Nuremberg’s city wall.
Since its inauguration in 2011, the Heilpflanzengarten has flourished. It now hosts about 100 different plant species within its 140 square meters. Each plant is carefully labeled. This allows visitors to learn about their unique properties.
The Heilpflanzengarten is open from April to October. The gates are open daily from 8 AM to 8 PM. Every Friday afternoon, from 4 PM to 6 PM, knowledgeable volunteers are on site. These volunteers answer questions and welcome new members.
Each summer, the garden hosts an intercultural Heilkräutergartenfest. It provides a space for diverse cultural exchange and learning. You can explore the garden and learn about the healing power of plants. Discover how different cultures use these natural remedies.
