From the heavens to Kyoto’s heart, a tale unfolds at Gekkoujinja Shrine. Here, in the quiet corner of Nishinokyo Nishi-Gekkou-cho, Gekkoujinja Shrine stands as a subtle testament to time’s passage. This unassuming shrine, dedicated to the deity Gekkou Daimyojin, holds a secret connection to Japan’s celestial history. North of Gekkoujinja Shrine once stood the Kyoto Gaiyo-sho, a pivotal location in Japan’s transition to modern cartography. This bureau, responsible for revising maps and calendars, was where the foundations of Japan’s modern maps were laid. The very maps we use today owe a debt to this place. Gekkoujinja Shrine is believed to have served as the protective deity for this important bureau. The bureau, established by the Edo Shogunate, adopted Western astronomical practices to refine their understanding of the moon and stars. These observations influenced not only their calendar system, but also the creation of the “Dai Nihon Enkai Yochi Zenzu” (Complete Map of the Japanese Coastal Area), a groundbreaking achievement by Inō Tadataka. This map, based on the prime meridian passing through Kyoto Gaiyo-sho, cemented the location’s importance in Japanese cartographic history. Even the name “Gekkou” (moonlight) reflects the area’s connection to celestial observation and the former presence of the Kyoto Gaiyo-sho. The shrine, nestled among residential buildings near Nijō Station, remains a hidden gem. A quiet reminder of a time when the heavens guided the hands of mapmakers, shaping our understanding of Japan itself. Gekkoujinja Shrine isn’t just a place of worship, it is a portal to a past where science and spirituality intertwined.
