On a crisp Manchester day in 2003, the Etihad Stadium roared to life. Not for a football match, but for a concert by rock legends Bon Jovi. This marked a new chapter for the stadium, showcasing its versatility beyond the beautiful game. Etihad Stadium, originally called the City of Manchester Stadium, had a unique beginning. Built for the 2002 Commonwealth Games, it was initially an athletics venue. Following the games, a transformation began. The running track disappeared, the pitch was lowered, and new stands emerged, turning the athletics stadium into a football powerhouse. This transition cost Manchester City a significant sum, a testament to the club’s commitment to creating a top-tier footballing venue. The stadium’s inaugural football match in August 2003 saw Manchester City triumph over Barcelona 2-1. A few days later, the first competitive match took place. City played against Total Network Solutions in the UEFA Cup. The Etihad Stadium has continued to evolve. The Colin Bell Stand, originally the West Stand, underwent significant changes. Executive boxes were added to the North Stand. The South Stand became home to the most dedicated City fans. The stadium even boasts a memorial garden, a unique feature for a football ground. It includes artifacts from both Hyde Road and Maine Road, City’s former homes. Etihad Stadium has hosted numerous events besides football, including concerts by iconic bands like U2 and Oasis. The Oasis concerts in 2005 hold the record for the largest crowds, packing nearly 60,000 fans into the stadium. In 2011, a landmark deal with Abu Dhabi-based airline Etihad Airways led to the stadium’s renaming. Etihad Stadium stands as a symbol of Manchester City’s ambition and a testament to the city’s sporting legacy.
