“Four hundred years old” they say. That’s Wat Bang Krang. Right here before you. This ancient temple whispers tales of Ayutthaya’s glory. Imagine King Naresuan’s army resting on the Suphan River’s banks after a victorious battle. They created 84000 amulets. These were enshrined within Wat Bang Krang. A dedication to fallen soldiers. A powerful offering of merit.

Wat Bang Krang is more than just a temple. It’s a treasure chest of history. It holds the legend of Khun Paen. This great warrior. His legend originated between BE 2034 and 2072. This period marked the reign of King Rama II. A sacred amulet was discovered here. It became one of Thailand’s most popular. It was named Phra Khun Paen. After the warrior.

But the amulets of Wat Bang Krang aren’t just legendary. They’re diverse. Twenty different types were unearthed around BE 2447. From a stupa behind the old vihara. These ranged from the Pims Na Yak with its giant face to the Pims Na Noom with a youthful visage. The Pims Na Devada with single or double roofs are unique. The Pims Sian Tor boasted a big head Buddha image. Each one holds its own story. Each one a piece of Wat Bang Krang’s history.

Some amulets are particularly significant. The Phra Khun Phaen amulets of the Samathi or Pim Yai type. These are baked clay amulets. They are characterized by a rough interior filled with sand. The Buddha is in a meditation posture. Full of grace and majesty. They are considered the ultimate warrior amulets. Highly valuable and sought after. The Buddha’s head doesn’t touch the bell-shaped arch. The hair curls like a crescent moon. The nose is broad. The mouth is prominent and curved. The eyes are round. The robe’s forked end resembles a swallow’s tail.

King Chulalongkorn visited Suphan Buri in 1908. He even wrote about Wat Bang Krang. He named a Tambon after the temple. Sunthorn Phu. Thailand’s great poet. He also visited. His words paint a vivid picture of Wat Bang Krang’s serene beauty. A place of quiet reflection. A place where history lives and breathes.
