Amidst the tapestry of Lille’s streets, lies a quiet tribute, Allée Émile Dubocage. This seemingly unassuming pathway echoes with the courage of a man who dared to resist. Émile Dubocage, a railway worker from Roubaix, became a key figure in the French Resistance during World War II. Allée Émile Dubocage, named in his honor, serves as a poignant reminder of his sacrifice. Dubocage, nicknamed “Milo” within the Sylvestre Farmer network, used his position as a garde-barrière on Rue Pierre-Catteau to connect with the burgeoning resistance in Wattrelos. His involvement wasn’t accidental. His job provided him a unique vantage point and access to vital information. He quickly became a crucial asset, recruiting and training new members, and participating in daring sabotage operations. One such act was the destruction of the Desmet factory in Ronchin in November 1943. Allée Émile Dubocage invites us to reflect on these acts of defiance. Dubocage’s bravery extended to aiding the recovery of essential supplies, further disrupting the German war machine. However, his courageous acts came at a steep price. In January 1944, Dubocage, along with his comrade Alfred Vanhecke, was arrested, likely due to a betrayal. The horrors he and his family endured before his deportation are a testament to the brutality of war. He witnessed the unimaginable, the violation of his daughter, before being sent to Malchow camp. Even in the face of such adversity, Dubocage found solace in the support of Reverend Aubin, whose poignant letters to Dubocage’s wife offered a glimmer of hope amidst despair. Allée Émile Dubocage stands as a testament to this unwavering spirit. Tragically, Dubocage perished in Malchow on May 15, 1945, just as the war was ending. His remains were later repatriated and interred in Roubaix’s military cemetery, alongside those of Jean Lebas, a symbolic homecoming for two heroes. Posthumously awarded the Croix de Guerre and other honors, Dubocage’s legacy lives on. Allée Émile Dubocage, more than just a street, embodies the enduring spirit of resistance and the sacrifices made for freedom. As you walk this path, remember Émile Dubocage, the railway worker who became a hero, whose courage continues to inspire.
