Padre José Alfredo is responsible for Calvário today. He is also in charge of the Casa do Gaiato de Beire. He speaks of evolving with the times. He strives to keep up with contemporary society. He does this by seeking ways to welcome patients. He also takes care of people with disabilities. Yet, he holds firm to Calvário’s original spirit. The Gospel guides them to a family environment. Padre Américo’s life was dedicated to the poor. He paid special attention to at-risk youth. They were welcomed into the Casas do Gaiato. He helped the incurably ill. Born in 1887, Américo Monteiro de Aguiar founded Obra da Rua in 1940.
Considered a prominent figure in the Catholic Church, Padre Américo passed away in 1956. He was 68 years old. The beatification process began in 1986. Canonization confirms a Catholic believer is worthy of public veneration. They become intercessors. They are models of holiness.
The name Calvário is inspired by the Gospels. It encapsulates the essence of redemption. Padre Américo believed such names and works were crucial. He felt the world needed human endeavors with a divine purpose.
In 2024, a celebration marked Calvário’s 70th anniversary. It happened at the Coliseu do Porto. Teresa Salgueiro and the Army Band participated. They helped commemorate Padre Américo’s work. The event celebrated his creation.
