In January 1955, the University Presbyterian Church sanctuary was dedicated. The cross from Trinity University was carried in procession. It was installed in the chancel. The cross remains there to this day. Its jagged ends remind members of a broken world needing healing. Later, University Presbyterian Church began giving replicas of the cross to departing members.
The sanctuary itself is a work of art. O’Neil Ford initially drafted designs in 1952. He also designed the relocated Trinity University campus. San Antonio architect Milton A. Ryan completed the design in 1954. Ryan was known for his mid-century modern style. The sanctuary features a peaked roof. It is a common element in mid-century modern churches. The building rests on slender steel columns. This creates a compelling spatial juxtaposition. The sanctuary can seat about 400 people. The seating can be reconfigured as needed. The main organ sits on an upper loft. It is behind the congregation seating.
