The story begins in 1921. Two brothers Phúc Mậu and Phúc Hùng left their struggling village. They sought fortune in Hanoi’s booming tailoring industry. Their initial work as fabric merchants led to apprenticeships with established tailors. Their talent and dedication quickly gained recognition.
By the mid-1920s Phúc Mậu and Phúc Hùng were renowned. They crafted bespoke suits for Hanoi’s elite. Their success inspired others from Lăng Cầu. Many traded their farming tools for needles and thread.
The 1930s marked Lăng Cầu’s golden age. Tailoring businesses like Phúc Duyên Phúc Thành and Phúc Long flourished. These firms used ‘Phúc’ or ‘Phú’ to signify their origin and connection to the village’s prestigious reputation. Wealth poured into Lăng Cầu. The simple wooden houses were replaced by magnificent mansions. These striking structures blended French Neoclassical style with traditional Asian elements and Feng Shui principles.
The village became known as the ‘western village’ the most beautiful in the Red River Delta. Its prosperity attracted residents from all over.
The Second World War brought a devastating end to this prosperity. The economic instability after the war and the rise of communism forced many tailors to flee. They left to protect their businesses and avoid persecution.
Lăng Cầu’s population never fully recovered. Today only around 50 of the original mansions remain. They stand as silent witnesses to a glorious past. Most villagers now returned to agriculture. A few continue the tailoring tradition often working in factories.
Efforts are underway to preserve the remaining mansions. Their historical significance is finally being recognized. Architects are working on restoration plans. But their future remains uncertain.
