Wasn’t the Messiah Evangelical Lutheran Church once a humble mission? Right here on Sherman Avenue in Inwood Manhattan stands a testament to faith’s enduring power. Messiah Lutheran Church wasn’t always this grand. Its story begins much more modestly. Founded in 1916 the congregation initially held services in less-than-ideal locations. Think cramped storefronts. Think small rented spaces. They moved several times searching for a permanent home.

But the spirit of this community persevered. In 1926 a major step was taken. A two-story brick school and chapel was built. Architect George W. Conable designed this building. The cost was a considerable $40000. Pastor Frederick P. Wilhelm a key figure in the church’s early days oversaw its construction. He lived nearby at 609 West 204th Street. He shepherded the congregation. He witnessed its growth. He oversaw the groundbreaking and the cornerstone laying. He celebrated its dedication in February 1927.

The church wasn’t just a place of worship. It was a center for community. A Ladies Aid Society formed in 1916. A Young People’s Society followed in 1917. These groups fostered fellowship and strengthened the community bonds. They provided social support. They organized events. They helped build a strong foundation for future generations.

In 1945 Messiah Evangelical Lutheran Church merged with St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church. The combined congregation moved into Messiah’s building. However this wasn’t the end of the story. In 1957 they moved again to a newly built church at 202 Sherman Avenue. The original Messiah building was then sold. Yet the legacy of Messiah Evangelical Lutheran Church endures. It’s a reminder of a congregation’s unwavering faith and its commitment to building community. It is a story of perseverance. It is a story of adaptation. It is a story of hope. And it is a story worth remembering.
