In the heart of Germany’s Baden-Württemberg region, nestled between the Black Forest and the Rhine Valley, lies the charming town of Gundelfingen. Gundelfingen’s story begins in the 4th century when an Alamannic chief named Gundolf settled in the area. The name “Gundelfingen” itself reflects this early history, meaning “Gundolf’s people.” Our journey through time takes us to 1008, the year of Gundelfingen’s first documented appearance. In a treaty, the town is referred to as “Gondalvingen.” For centuries, Gundelfingen was under the control of the Counts of Freiburg and the Zähringers, who held their seat at the nearby Zähringen Castle. In 1327, Gundelfingen was sold to Schnewelin Bernlapp, marking a significant shift in its ownership. Years later, in 1507, the town was again sold, this time to Margrave Christopher I of Baden, becoming an integral part of Baden’s territory. Gundelfingen remained relatively small for many centuries. In the 16th century, it had around 350 inhabitants, a number that grew only modestly to 620 by 1825. However, the 20th century brought significant growth, with the population exploding to 5,016 in 1970 and exceeding 11,000 by 2002. Gundelfingen’s growth was not limited to its main town. In the 1970s, the nearby village of Wildtal became part of the municipality, enriching Gundelfingen’s history and landscape. Wildtal, first mentioned in 1273 as “Wülptal” or “Wolfstal,” meaning “wild dale,” adds another layer to our story. Today, Gundelfingen stands as a testament to its rich past. The town continues to thrive, with storks nesting atop the Protestant church steeple, a symbol of renewal and prosperity. As we stand here, imagine the echoes of history resonating through the streets of Gundelfingen, a town shaped by centuries of change, growth, and the enduring spirit of its people.
