Beyond Rostock’s medieval walls lies the Steintor-Vorstadt. This suburb blossomed in the 1850s. Unlike the Kröpeliner-Tor-Vorstadt, a hub for shipyard workers, the Steintor-Vorstadt became a haven for the city’s affluent citizens. Imagine strolling down Ernst-Barlach-Straße, formerly Neue Wallstraße, where the first grand villas appeared around 1850. Soon after, elegant homes lined Friedrich-Franz-Straße, now August-Bebel-Straße, and Augustenstraße. By 1900, the Steintor-Vorstadt expanded further south. This planned extension created a harmonious blend of wide, tree-lined streets and charming squares. The western and northern sections boast a continuous row of impressive buildings. The eastern and southern areas open into more spacious layouts. Architectural styles range from classicism and historicism to the elegant flourishes of Art Nouveau. Tragically, the Jewish community’s synagogue on Augustenstraße was destroyed by the Nazis in 1938. The Steintor-Vorstadt also holds landmarks like the Max-Samuel-Haus and Rostock’s main train station. Originally, streets in the northwest were named after prominent figures from Rostock and Mecklenburg. Other streets bore the names of battle sites, generals, and politicians from the Franco-Prussian War. For instance, today’s Rosa-Luxemburg-Straße was once Kaiser-Wilhelm-Straße. After 1945, many streets were renamed to honor German poets. Today, the Steintor-Vorstadt remains a peaceful residential area within the Stadtmitte district. It attracts professionals such as lawyers, brokers, architects, and engineers. After 1990, modern townhouses filled some vacant plots. Many of the older buildings underwent loving restorations. The area around the main train station was completely redesigned as part of the station’s renovation. The Steintor-Vorstadt stands as a testament to Rostock’s growth. Its collection of villas and grand homes from the Gründerzeit era now forms a protected heritage area, a reminder of its rich past. Numerous individual buildings within the Steintor-Vorstadt are also listed on Rostock’s historic register.
