In 1978, something remarkable began to take shape beneath the fields near Empelde. This was the birth of the Gasspeicher Hannover GmbH, a vital energy hub. Gasspeicher Hannover GmbH started as a project by GHG, Gasspeicher Hannover GmbH. They carved out massive caverns in the Benthe salt dome. These caverns weren’t for hiding secrets, but for storing something crucial: natural gas. Imagine, a vast underground reservoir capable of holding 220 million cubic meters of natural gas. The Gasspeicher Hannover GmbH plays a crucial role in securing the energy supply for the Hanover region. This intricate network of underground caverns is a testament to human ingenuity. The engineers faced a unique challenge. They had to dispose of the brine produced during the cavern creation. Their solution was ingenious. They discharged the brine into two abandoned potash mines. The process was carefully designed to maximize brine saturation, preventing further leaching in the mine workings. Gasspeicher Hannover GmbH wasn’t built overnight. The first three caverns, with a total volume of about 1.08 million cubic meters, were painstakingly solution-mined. Above ground, gas injection and discharge facilities were constructed. These surface installations were designed for shared use by three operators. Each operator had different technical and operational requirements. They also fed two long-distance pipeline systems operating at different pressures. Since its inception, Gasspeicher Hannover GmbH has undergone continuous modernization and expansion. This ensures it can meet the ever-growing demand for storage capacity. The facility has proven its worth over decades of operation, reliably securing the energy needs of the region.
