Gazing up at the Mercedes House, imagine an enormous, silver, perforated shell shimmering under the Manhattan sun. Mercedes House isn’t just another residential tower. It rises from a modest 86 feet along 11th Avenue to a towering 348 feet at the center of the block. This tiered structure is not merely aesthetic. It allows nearly every one of the 865 apartments within Mercedes House to enjoy unobstructed views of the Hudson River and DeWitt Clinton Park. Each level steps up from the one below, creating private roof terraces and green spaces for residents. This “staircase” design also strategically minimizes the building’s impact on neighboring structures and maximizes natural light penetration. At the base of Mercedes House, two courtyards offer residents tranquil escapes from the city bustle. One courtyard boasts a sun-drenched pool and garden. The other provides a shaded space for various activities. These courtyards, carved into the “staircase,” reduce the building’s mass and create a sense of openness. The unique, angular orientation of the building is a deliberate departure from the typical Manhattan grid. This design choice minimizes shadows on the adjacent DeWitt Clinton Park, ensuring that the green space remains vibrant and accessible. The facade of Mercedes House adds to its unique charm. The street-facing walls are clad in a silver, perforated rain screen, giving the building a futuristic, almost otherworldly look. The interior facades, overlooking the courtyards, feature a hybrid curtain wall system that allows for ample natural light. Mercedes House also boasts a large commercial component, including a 55,000-square-foot Mercedes-Benz showroom. This showroom anchors the ground floor, while below ground, an extensive 275,000 square feet is dedicated to Mercedes service floors. Beyond the showroom, the building houses a health club, retail spaces, and even community use areas, contributing to its mixed-use nature.
