Three rough stone slabs. That’s what forms the base of The Altar. This isn’t just any altar. It’s a powerful sculpture in Salt Lake City’s Gilgal Sculpture Garden. Created by Thomas Battersby Child Jr it’s a striking interpretation of an ancient sacrificial altar. Child meticulously selected three stone slabs from Wayne County. He envisioned them as the surface of a sacred place.

The Altar is more than just stone. It’s a testament to sacrifice. At one end sits a brick furnace. This is where offerings were symbolically burned. The grease from these offerings was lit in a “lamp of truth”. This ritual signified a covenant. It’s a fascinating blend of religious symbolism and artistic expression.
