Deep beneath the surface, a silent sentinel keeps watch. Southwest Piezometer Number 2, a humble well, stands as a silent witness to the city’s growth and change. Built in 1980, this piezometer is the only one in Harris County dedicated to monitoring groundwater levels. It’s a vital part of the USGS’s efforts to understand how water moves through the underground, helping them predict potential droughts and flooding events. The data collected here provides valuable insights into the health of our region’s precious water resources. The piezometer reaches a depth of 1943 feet, deeply embedded into the Evangeline Aquifer, a key source of drinking water for Houston. It may look like an ordinary well, but it’s a critical piece of the puzzle in understanding the fragile balance of our water supply.
