The Jesus-Christus-Kirche Dahlem has a rich history. The growing population in Dahlem needed a larger place to worship. So a competition was held to design a new church. Jürgen Bachmann a local architect won in March 1929. Construction began in 1930. Despite economic hardship the community completed the Jesus-Christus-Kirche Dahlem. It opened its doors in December 1932.

Look at the church’s exterior. Bachmann chose light red clinker bricks to harmonize with the surrounding villas and parks. The 50-meter-high tower was intended as a visible landmark for Dahlem. See the sculpture above the entrance. It is Ludwig Isenbeck’s “Christ Blessing the Congregation”.

Step inside the Jesus-Christus-Kirche Dahlem. Notice the bright walls and dark ceiling. Originally a large tapestry displaying the Creed adorned the altar wall. Colored lead glazing added richness to the windows. The acoustics in the Jesus-Christus-Kirche Dahlem are exceptional due to the unique ceiling design. Johannes Biehle consulted on the acoustics. The acoustics are great for both speech and music.

During World War II allied air raids damaged the Jesus-Christus-Kirche Dahlem. The windows were destroyed. The roof and interior plaster were damaged. The bells were seized for war production. Services were held in a nearby house until 1947. The Jesus-Christus-Kirche Dahlem was rebuilt and reconsecrated. New steel bells replaced the originals.

The Jesus-Christus-Kirche Dahlem has a unique role today. It serves as a recording studio. Many famous orchestras choirs and soloists have recorded here. The Berlin Philharmonic and conductors like Herbert von Karajan have used the space. Record companies value the acoustics and large performance area.
