Cemitério do Prado do Repouso opened in 1839. It became Porto’s first public cemetery. Before this, people were buried inside chapels. The site was initially planned for a seminary. They planned the construction of the S. Vítor church. The location was chosen because of its pre-existing setup. It had defined walls and streets. Over time, it became an important landmark. It is known for its neo-Gothic architecture and historical importance. It covers 10 hectares of land.

The Portuguese government introduced reforms in 1835. These were under the leadership of Passos Manuel. One reform concerned burial practices in Porto’s cemeteries. The government banned burials in churches. They also banned them in private cemeteries. Burials should only occur outside the city limits. This was an attempt to improve public health. It aimed to prevent the spread of diseases. These diseases were caused by corpses in churches.
The site of today’s cemetery was outside the city limits back then. It was already walled. It was a suitable location. The city council authorized public works. They adapted the site through earthworks. The church of St. Victor was integrated. It became the chapel of the Prado do Repouso cemetery.
Wide paths form the main axes. They connect the different areas of the cemetery. Private cemeteries of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia do Porto are also located here. You can also find the Ordem do Terço and the Confraria do Santíssimo Sacramento de Santo Ildefonso.

The “Monumento aos Vencidos da Revolta de 31 de Janeiro” is the other. It commemorates those defeated in the 1891 Republican Uprising. The monument shows a mourning figure. It represents the city of Porto. It commemorates those who lost their lives in the uprising. Henrique Moreira designed it.
