“In Glorious Memory Of Those Who Died For The Empire” This inscription on the Gibraltar Cross of Sacrifice echoes across the years. It stands as a poignant reminder of sacrifice.

The Cross of Sacrifice is more than just a monument. It is a symbol of remembrance for those who gave their lives during the World Wars. Designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield in 1917 it is one of many similar crosses found throughout Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemeteries. The Gibraltar Cross stands at the junction of Winston Churchill Avenue and Devil’s Tower Road. It’s made of Cornish granite. A bronze sword points downwards. This forms another cross with the crosspiece.

Erected by the Royal Engineers and unveiled on Armistice Day in 1922 the ceremony was filmed. This film is historically significant. It’s the first motion picture ever made in Gibraltar. The event was led by General Sir Horace Lockwood Smith-Dorrien the Governor of Gibraltar. The Cross of Sacrifice served as the focal point for Remembrance Sunday ceremonies until 2009. Roadworks forced a change of venue to the Gibraltar War Memorial.

The Cross wasn’t always here. During World War II it was removed for military reasons. It was badly damaged by erosion. A new cross was erected at its present location. The dates 1914-1918 and 1939-1945 are inscribed on its octagonal base. A nearby plaque details its construction and unveiling. Another panel lists the names of those who died for the Empire. Many of these brave soldiers are buried at sea. Their names are honoured on memorial panels near the Cross. They lie alongside comrades in the North Front and Jewish cemeteries.

The Gibraltar Cross of Sacrifice isn’t just a war memorial. It is a testament to courage and sacrifice. It is a symbol of remembrance. It is a place for quiet reflection. It reminds us of the cost of freedom. It is a vital part of Gibraltar’s history and heritage. It continues to serve as a powerful symbol of remembrance.
