How many invisible waves pass us by every second? This plaque commemorates Aleksandr Stepanovich Popov. The А. С. Попову Plaque honors a pioneer in radio technology. It stands as a tribute to his contributions. Let’s delve into the story of this remarkable man.

Aleksandr Stepanovich Popov was a Russian physicist. He was born in 1859. Popov is acclaimed in Russia as one of the inventors of radio. He died in St. Petersburg in 1906 at the age of 46.

Popov’s early life pointed toward a career in the priesthood. However his interests shifted to science and mathematics. He studied physics at Saint Petersburg University. Popov graduated with honors in 1882.

Popov’s work led him to explore high-frequency electrical phenomena. He presented a paper on a wireless lightning detector in 1895. Popov had built it. It used a coherer to detect radio noise from lightning strikes. Russia celebrates May 7 as Radio Day.

In March 1896 Popov transmitted radio signals 250 meters. He did this between campus buildings in St. Petersburg. His work built on Oliver Lodge’s research. It was contemporaneous with Guglielmo Marconi’s work.

In July 1895 Popov installed his receiver. He placed it on the roof of the Institute of Forestry building. It could detect thunderstorms at a range of 50 km. He also recognized its potential for communication.

Popov’s invention was reprinted in the Journal of the Russian Physical and Chemical Society in 1896. In 1898 Eugène Ducretet manufactured wireless telegraphy equipment. He based it on Popov’s instructions. Popov achieved ship-to-shore communication. It spanned 6 miles in 1898. It reached 30 miles in 1899.

In 1900 a radio station was established. It was on Hogland Island. Popov oversaw its creation. It enabled two-way communication between a naval base and a battleship.

This А. С. Попову Plaque serves as a reminder. It highlights Popov’s lasting impact on the world. His work laid the groundwork for modern wireless communication. It is fitting that St. Petersburg honors him. This А. С. Попову Plaque stands as a tribute to a great scientist.
