Hidden within Berlin-Friedrichsfelde, the Sonnenhof whispers tales of innovative architecture and social vision. The Sonnenhof, designed by Erwin Anton Gutkind, stands as a testament to the vibrant era of Weimar Germany. Built between 1925 and 1927, the Sonnenhof was more than just apartments. It was a community. Picture families with two working parents, a common scenario in the bustling city. Gutkind envisioned a space that catered to their needs. He designed the Sonnenhof around a bright, park-like courtyard. This courtyard housed a daycare center and playgrounds, a haven for children while their parents worked. Two shops provided daily necessities, eliminating the need for lengthy trips. The green courtyard offered a tranquil escape after a long day. The Sonnenhof’s design earned Gutkind national and international acclaim, solidifying his reputation as a socially conscious architect. The building’s exterior exudes strength and resilience with its brick facades. In contrast, the courtyard facades, adorned with light plaster and colorful accents, create a warm, inviting atmosphere. Balconies connect the apartments to the vibrant green spaces. The Sonnenhof’s innovative concept fostered a new way of living together. In 1928, the Sonnenhof hosted the exhibition “Small Homes or No Home”, further showcasing its unique approach to urban living. The exhibition, organized by Jakobus Goettel, highlighted small apartments designed for low-income earners, reflecting the social awareness of the time. Interestingly, the Sonnenhof wasn’t always as we see it today. Originally, it comprised 266 two-and-a-half room apartments and two shops. Between 1972 and 1973, the building underwent renovations as part of the GDR’s modernization program. Additional floors were added to the attic, increasing the number of apartments to 333. As you stand before the Sonnenhof today, remember the vision of its architect, Erwin Gutkind. He sought to create more than just housing. He aimed to build a community where families could thrive. The Sonnenhof’s enduring presence serves as a reminder of the power of thoughtful design and its impact on the lives of its inhabitants.
