Can you believe that Wang Burapha Phirom was once home to a grand palace? It’s hard to imagine amongst the bustling streets of today. This area, Wang Burapha Phirom, gets its name from the Buraphaphirom Palace. The palace belonged to Prince Bhanurangsi Savangwongse and stood majestically until the 1950s. Imagine a magnificent two-story palace, built in the colonial style by the Italian architect Joachim Grassi. It was so grand, stretching all the way from Maha Chai Fort to Saphan Lek! Sadly, after World War II, the palace fell into disrepair. The heirs eventually sold it in 1951, and it was demolished to make way for a new era of entertainment and commerce. This was the birth of Wang Burapha, a vibrant district with three new movie theaters: Kings, Queens, and Grand. Wang Burapha became a magnet for the young and trendy. Sadly, its heyday didn’t last forever. By the late 1960s, new shopping centers began to outshine Wang Burapha, leaving its legacy in the memories of those who danced in its theaters and strolled its bustling streets.
