Gazing upon this plaque we are reminded of the West Point Baptist Church’s enduring legacy. It all began in 1870. The church was first known as West Point Free Mission Baptist Church. Its early history is a testament to faith.
Written documentation only exists from 1882 onward. The Reverend G. R. Cushenberry was the first pastor. Early members met in various places for worship. They acquired this site in 1900.
A small one-room sanctuary served the congregation for a time. It was later razed. This made way for a larger two-story structure. The cornerstone was laid on July 4 1921. Reverend John C. Calhoun led this effort. The new building was then completed.
