Consider this. The Holy Church of Panagia Romvi stands as a testament to Athens’ rich history. It is located on Evangelistrias Street. This church is dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin Mary. Its name, Romvi, is quite interesting. It may come from the Roubis family. They were either builders or restorers of the church.

Let’s delve into its past. The Mary of Romvi dates back to Byzantine times. Specifically, the 11th century. During the Ottoman rule, it underwent renovations. The church is a three-aisle basilica. Its roof is barrel-vaulted and complex. Inside, you’ll notice two rows of columns. They are crafted from white marble. These columns divide the three aisles.

The wooden carved templon catches the eye. It features two rows of icons. These icons are covered in silver. Gold-plated decorations add to their beauty. Between the icon rows is a vine tendril. It is gold-plated. Grapes, rosettes, and geometric shapes adorn it. The bishop’s throne mirrors the templon’s style. Grape-embedded frames and palmettes grace its top.

Look up. You’ll see Christ Pantokrator depicted on the barrel-vaulted roof. The icon of the Dormition of Virgin Mary is also remarkable. It portrays the Virgin Mary and an angel. Silver covers them. The Holy City of Jerusalem forms the backdrop. The Cretan art style is evident.

The icon of Virgin Mary Portaitissa stands out. It is adorned with silver offerings. These offerings signify the pilgrims’ faith. They believe in the Theotokos’s miraculous interventions.

In 1966, conservation work took place. The Fund of Clergymen of Greece financed it. Now known as the Welfare Fund for the Orthodox Vicarial Clergy of Greece, they ensured the church’s preservation. During the work, the masonry’s common construction was noted. Coatings were reapplied to address its appearance.

More discoveries occurred in 1973-1974. Relics of masonry were found. There was also part of an Ionic base. Two pieces of a smooth-surface column were unearthed. A fragment from a pithos jar rim was also found.

The name Romvi has an interesting story. It may be a corruption of the Rombis family name. They were an Athenian lordly family during Ottoman rule. The Mary of Romvi served as their family church. Historical records mention a notary named Roubas in Athens in 1622. This supports the theory of the name’s origin.

Today, the Mary of Romvi remains a spiritual haven. It is located in the heart of Athens. Services take place every Sunday. All-night vigils are also held frequently. This church offers a peaceful escape. It is a place of reflection amidst the bustling city. The Mary of Romvi stands as a testament to faith. It is a cherished landmark in Athens.
