Gazing upon this curious structure, one might wonder about its purpose. This, my friends, is the Wassertreppe, a unique fountain nestled in the heart of Berlin. The Wassertreppe sits serenely on a patch of lawn, just in front of the Eternithaus on Altonaer Straße. Created in 1997 by the artist Holger Uhrig, the Wassertreppe isn’t your typical splashing fountain. It’s a sculptural piece, a stepped concrete structure that tapers as it rises, open towards the street. Three central steps, etched with horizontal grooves, ascend the structure. These steps are framed by a multi-tiered border that culminates in a peak, giving the Wassertreppe an abstract, pyramid-like form. The outer surface is painted a striking brick red, while the inner surface is a soft eggshell color. Look closely, and you’ll notice a metal plaque on the side, proudly displaying the title “Wassertreppe” and the artist’s name. Over time, the constant presence of moisture has allowed biogenic growth to flourish on the steps and in the surrounding basin, adding a touch of nature’s artistry to Uhrig’s creation. The Wassertreppe stands within a circular basin, adorned with irregular mosaic shards, adding a touch of sparkle to this urban oasis. This mosaic-lined basin is slightly recessed, creating a tranquil pool that reflects the sculpture and the sky above. The Wassertreppe stands as a testament to the harmonious blend of art and nature, a quiet retreat in the bustling city. It’s a place where one can pause, reflect, and appreciate the beauty in the unexpected.
