A majestic stallion frozen in time. That’s the image that greets you at the King Rama V Equestrian Monument. This isn’t just any statue. It’s the first monument ever dedicated to a Thai king.

King Chulalongkorn Rama V sits proudly atop his horse. The monument stands in the Royal Plaza a regal scene. It commemorates the 40th anniversary of his coronation. Completed in 1908 it was cast in Paris by a French sculptor. It took a whole year to create. The king himself inaugurated it.

The funds a million baht a vast sum back then came from public donations. It showcased the people’s deep love and gratitude for his modernizing reforms. Sadly King Rama V passed away in 1910. His son King Rama VI used the remaining funds to establish Chulalongkorn University.

The monument once graced the back of the 10 baht banknote. Today it’s replaced by a coin but the reverence remains. Thais visit daily to pray and pay homage. Tuesdays Thursdays and Sundays are particularly busy. On October 23 Chulalongkorn Memorial Day thousands gather.

This magnificent monument has witnessed history unfold. Even during times of tension it offers solace. In 2004 during massive labor protests thousands sought refuge here. They prayed and vowed to protect the institutions established under King Rama V.

Even almost a century after his death King Rama V’s legacy remains vibrant. People still visit the King Rama V Equestrian Monument day and night. Their devotion is a testament to his lasting impact on Thailand. It’s a powerful symbol of enduring respect and national pride.
