Founded in 1333, Kinderhaus began as a house for lepers. It was called “der kinderen hus”. Today, we stand in Kinderhaus, a vibrant district of Münster. Kinderhaus is located about 4 km north of Münster’s city center. It is part of the Münster-Nord borough with Coerde and Sprakel.
Originally, Kinderhaus consisted of the leper house, a church and some farms. This remained so for centuries. Over time Kinderhaus has grown significantly. In 1903, Kinderhaus officially became part of Münster.
Kinderhaus largely escaped major damage during the war. In the 1950s, it grew rapidly. The Brünningheide settlement was built between 1972 and 1978. Its core features residential complexes that are up to twelve stories high.
Today, Kinderhaus has about 16000 residents. The main center around Idenbrockplatz was completed in 1984. It has become the cultural and social heart of Kinderhaus. The Bürgerhaus is a popular venue for events. These events include exhibitions, concerts and theater performances.
Families find Kinderhaus appealing. It offers a wide range of kindergartens and schools. Kinderhaus boasts what is believed to be Germany’s oldest school. The Waldschule was initially built in 1673. It is still used for teaching today. The original schoolhouse now serves as a workshop for the Waldschule.
Besides elementary, secondary, and comprehensive schools, Kinderhaus has special schools. These schools cater to the needs of the hearing impaired, visually impaired and physically disabled. Kinderhaus also has a Catholic school for students with learning disabilities.
The Kinderbachtal is an ideal place for recreation. This “green lung” of Kinderhaus provides a contrast to the dense residential areas. The Gasselstiege was once an important route between Münster and Holland. Now, it attracts cyclists and joggers. Nearby is Wasserschloss Wilkinghege. This moated castle dates back to 1311. Today it is a hotel.
