It’s a testament to the town’s pride in its famous son. Joseph Michael “Ducky” Medwick was a Major League Baseball star. He played for the St Louis Cardinals. He even earned the title of New Jersey’s “Athlete of the Century”. The park initially had two baseball fields a hockey rink a soccer field and playgrounds. There was even a mile-long walking path along the Raritan River. But the park had a secret. During a wetland restoration project contaminated soil was discovered. This soil was a byproduct of the park’s industrial past. The park underwent major renovations between 2010 and 2012. Fifteen million dollars in bonds funded the project. Today Joseph Medwick Park boasts a baseball field a football field and a multi-use AstroTurf field. A fascinating fact few know is that from 1936 to 1967 the site housed a 50000-watt radio transmitter for WOR. This station broadcast to Philadelphia Trenton and New York City.
