Savva. A name echoing through the bustling streets of Athens, a legacy etched in the rich tapestry of Greek culinary history. Did you know that the Savva restaurant chain’s story began not here in Monastiraki, but in the town of Palia Kokkinia in 1922? That year, Isaak, the great-grandfather of the current owners, opened “Aigyptiakon”, the first kebap restaurant in Greece. He brought with him a secret recipe for kebap, a culinary treasure from Minor Asia. This marked zero hour, the genesis of a culinary dynasty. The Savva name emerged in Monastiraki around 1960 with Isaak’s son, Savvas. He carried the torch of tradition, introducing Athenians and visitors to a wider array of Minor Asian recipes. Savvas’s sons, including Anestis, expanded the family business in the 1970s. They opened three restaurants in Monastiraki, cementing Savva’s reputation as a culinary landmark. In 2000, modernization met tradition. Anestis’s children, Savvas and Maria, took the helm. They sought to expand the business while honoring their family’s culinary heritage. Today, Savva on Ermou Street embodies this vision. It is a luxurious, four-level complex. The ground floor taverna exudes warmth, with its internal garden and live traditional music. Ascend to the first floor for the Sports Cafe-Bar, where you can relax with a drink and enjoy the Acropolis view. The second floor houses the à la carte restaurant, also with stunning Acropolis views. Finally, the rooftop Taratsa offers a breathtaking panorama of Athens, perfect for summer evenings. Savva continues its legacy of offering high-quality, traditional cuisine at affordable prices. So, as you savor the flavors of Savva, remember the journey. It began in 1922, a humble beginning that blossomed into a celebrated chapter in Athens’ culinary history. Savva: a testament to the enduring power of tradition, innovation, and family legacy.
