Founded in 1889 St Martin-in-the-Fields stands as a testament to faith and community. Henry Howard Houston a visionary leader built this church for a growing community. He selected the Rev Jacob LeRoy its first rector. LeRoy a strong churchman established traditions that continue today. These include weekly Eucharist services Evensong and a robust music program.

For over 125 years St Martin-in-the-Fields has thrived. It weathered the Depression and two World Wars. The parish grew and ministered to its flock through changing times. Rev Philemon Sturges led the church through a period of prosperity in the 1940s. Membership doubled under his leadership. The 1960s brought social change and liturgical exploration. The church adapted to the evolving needs of its community.

Rev Frank T Griswold III introduced new liturgies and volunteer programs. He also championed the inclusion of women priests. Rev Geralyne Wolf served as the first of seven women assistant or associate rectors. Under Rev Robert L Tate’s leadership St Martin’s continued its commitment to outreach. A major renovation was completed in 2001. The church embraced technology adopting a website and email newsletter.

In recent years St Martin-in-the-Fields has focused on its values. This includes becoming an anti-racist community. The church also prioritizes hunger education and environmental stewardship. The SUPPER ministry addresses hunger. The Climate Action Team focuses on ecological impact. The vibrant community of St Martin-in-the-Fields continues to flourish. It looks forward to its next chapter of service and growth. It’s a place where faith community and action intertwine. A beacon of hope for the future.
