“Did you know Wat Sai Am Phan Em San stands as a serene testament to Bangkok’s rich history and culture?” This temple offers visitors a unique glimpse into the past. Wat Sai Am Phan Em San is located in the Don Mueang district.

Wat Sai, not Wat Sai Am Phan Em San, was established in 1703. This was during the Ayutthaya period. The founder’s name remains unknown. Wat Sai belongs to the Mahā Nikāya branch of Buddhism.

In 1708, Wat Sai received the Wisungkhamsima. It was then officially promoted as a community worship place. Wat Sai is famed in the Chom Thong area. It stands alongside Wat Nang Nong and Wat Ratchaorot. Inside Wat Sai’s vihara, many interesting Buddha images are housed.

Another attraction at Wat Sai is Tamnak Thong. King Sanphet VIII dedicated it. He was the 29th king of Ayutthaya. He was also known as Phra Chao Suea or Tiger King. The wooden house was decorated with gold painting on black resin lacquer. Some parts were likely covered with gold leaves.

Wat Sai also features an old ubosot built in the Ayutthaya style. It has been maintained in its original style. Next to it stands a modern ubosot. It was built with ceramics in Rattanakosin style. This combines the splendor of two art styles from different periods.

Beside Wat Sai, next to Khlong Dan canal, was Wat Sai floating market. It was once a busy floating market. Farmers sold products on boats. It was the most famous floating market in the central region. King Bhumibol Adulyadej took Crown Prince Akihito and Princess Michiko to visit in 1964.

The Wat Sai floating market became less active around 1977. Today, the floating market has disappeared. It is now a bustling morning land market. The only evidence of its past is a wooden nameplate above the market entrance.
