This church, right before you, is not the original. That honor belongs to a structure built in 1579 in Condita, dedicated to St. John the Baptist. The old church, a grand Portuguese creation, fell victim to a devastating epidemic. It was abandoned in 1840. The faithful then chose Marol, at that time, the village with the largest Catholic population in the region. They built the new church, St. John The Evangelist Church, using funds and salvaged treasures from their former sanctuary. Imagine the intricate altars, the carved pillars, and the life-size statues finding a new home here. This act speaks volumes about the community’s spirit.
