In 1924, amidst the industrial boom following World War I, Osaka City Nakayoshino Elementary School first opened its doors. It was originally known as Osaka City Yoshino Third Elementary School. The school was established to accommodate the burgeoning population of factory workers and their families in the present-day Taisho Ward. Can you imagine the hustle and bustle of those early days at Nakayoshino Elementary? The school began with 359 students, spread across eight grades, drawn from both Kitaenokawa and Yoshino Second Elementary schools. These children represented the hopes and dreams of a growing city. Nakayoshino Elementary School became a cornerstone of the community, a place where young minds were nurtured and prepared for the future. As the years passed, the school’s name changed. In 1941, under the National School Ordinance, it became Osaka City Nakayoshino National School. During World War II, the school faced numerous challenges. In 1944, students were evacuated to rural areas for safety. The school year ended prematurely in 1945 as the war intensified. The following year, Yoshino North National School merged with Nakayoshino due to widespread damage from the war. With the educational reforms of 1947, the school adopted its current name: Osaka City Nakayoshino Elementary School. The post-war era saw a period of rebuilding and growth. By 1952, Nakayoshino Elementary School reached its peak enrollment with 1,643 students in 30 classes. However, with the city’s population decline, student numbers began to dwindle. In recent years, there has been a resurgence in enrollment as residential development in the surrounding area increased. Nakayoshino Elementary School has witnessed over a century of Osaka’s history. It has weathered storms, both literal and figurative. The school song, composed in 1964, embodies the spirit of Nakayoshino Elementary. It speaks of healthy, bright children who think and act with purpose and determination. It reminds us of the school’s enduring mission: to cultivate the next generation of thinkers, doers, and dreamers. Even today, Nakayoshino Elementary continues to serve the community. It is a testament to the resilience and enduring spirit of Osaka.
