Founded in 1980 Saint Matthews Syriac Orthodox Church stands as a beacon of faith in Boston. This vibrant parish serves over 110 Syriac Orthodox families. Its story begins much earlier however. In the 1920s many Syriac Orthodox people migrated to the United States. The only Syriac Orthodox Church in Massachusetts at that time was in Worcester. The distance didn’t diminish the faith of Boston’s Syriac community. They remained steadfast in their devotion.
For decades they longed for their own church in Boston. Conversations about this need persisted. Finally on September 20 1980 with the blessing of Patriarch Mor Ignatius Zakka I and Archbishop Mor Athanasius Y Samuel a purchase agreement was signed. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts officially changed the name to Saint Matthews Syrian Orthodox Church Inc on November 13 1980.
Saint Matthews Syrian Orthodox Church isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to faith resilience and community. It reflects the rich Syriac Orthodox tradition. This includes the use of Syriac Aramaic the language spoken by Jesus himself. English and Arabic are also used. The church’s beliefs are rooted in the Nicene Creed. It emphasizes the Holy Trinity the Incarnation and the importance of the Holy Sacraments. It also recognizes seven sacraments. Four are essential for salvation. The church observes the teachings of the first three Ecumenical Councils. It rejects the Council of Chalcedon. The church’s liturgy is ancient and beautiful. Today Saint Matthews continues to thrive. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of the Syriac Orthodox community in Boston.
